On February 15, 1920,
Senator Albert Ullman of
California arranged to meet General
Emiliano Calles at a government dinner. Calles was the most popular man in the
United States of Mexico due to his brilliant victory over the
French at the
Battle of Chapultepec six years before, and there were indications that he was planning to run for
president. The men spoke together afterwards for two hours, and although details of the discussion were never made public, it is known that the two talked about
slavery and related subjects. As a result of the meeting, Ullman decided to lend his support to Calles' presidential aspirations.
