The highlight of the
1968 Grand Council elections occurred on February 7, 1968, when the three major candidates for
Governor-General of the
Confederation of North America participated in a
vitavised debate. The
People's Coalition's nominee was incumbent Governor-General
Carter Monaghan; the
Liberal Party's nominee was
Jason Winters, the
Governor of
Manitoba; and the newly-formed
Peace and Justice Party's nominee was political scientist and best-selling author
James Volk of
Burgoyne University. The next day, most North American reporters seemed to think that Volk was the most attractive speaker, Monaghan's arguments the most convincing, and Winters' the most confusing.
