On December 4, 1793, the state of
Jefferson held its first elections to the 42-seat
Chamber of Representatives under the recently-ratified
Lafayette Constitution. The franchise was open to all free males owning more than £5 in property. Although
Sobel doesn't mention how many voters participated in the election, the total white population of Jefferson at the time, including women and minors, was approximately 43,000.
