NaBloPoMo 2: I Fought the Law

Dear Mr. Pez,

This is in response to your communication of September 5, 2000 requesting legal representation in your prospective action against Texas Governor George Walker Bush. Your contention that Governor Bush is not eligible for the presidency due to foreign birth is problematic for a number of reasons.

First, as the son of American citizens (Mr. George Herbert Walker Bush and Mrs. Barbara Pierce Bush), Governor Bush is considered a natural born citizen of the United States of America, and thus eligible to serve as president, irrespective of his place of birth. Even if, as you allege, Governor Bush were actually born to a Mexican citizen, in Mexico, the fact that his father, Mr. George Herbert Walker Bush, is an American citizen would still qualify him for the status of a natural born citizen of the United States of America, and thus be eligible to serve as president.

Second, your contention that Governor Bush was actually born in Tijuana, Mexico to a Tijuana prostitute named Rosalita Fernandez is unsupported by the facts. The Texas State Archives currently hold a copy of Governor Bush's birth certificate, as noted below:

Biographical and family information consists of newspaper clippings, magazine articles, biographical sketches, correspondence, memos, lists, a transcript, a birth certificate, introductions, and speeches, used to prepare biographical sketches, introductions to speeches, and responses to correspondents.

A copy of Governor Bush's birth certificate was sent to this office by the Texas State Archives (see attachment 1), and it confirms that he was born in New Haven, Connecticut on July 6, 1946 to George Herbert Walker Bush and Barbara Pierce Bush.

In conclusion, we must decline your request that we represent you in your proposed legal action against Governor Bush, as we feel that such an action would represent a frivolous lawsuit and would damage the reputation of our firm.

Yours sincerely,
Steven Coaty, Esq.
