"Picking Up Slack" was first posted to the soc.history.what-if newsgroup on 3 March 2002, "My Father Was a Gambler Down in Georgia" on 15 July 2002 (28 years to the day after the vignette took place).

A slight correction -- Skinner is the powerful governor of the enormous state of Georgia, not the relatively insignificant governor of the SC.
