On November 5, 1937, national elections were held in the
Germanic Confederation. The result was a victory for the
Deutschland Party, led by Chancellor
Karl Bruning. The Deutschland Party gained control of the legislatures of Baden-Baden and Bavaria, as well as increasing its majority in the Prussian Diet. Bruning's main opponent,
Gustaf von Holtz of the
Democratic Party, was a leading peace advocate; his defeat was seen as a mandate for war.
